The City of Fairfield requires a business license for any person (sole-proprietorship), partnership, corporation, or entity engaged in business within the city limits. This includes contractors and their sub-contractors engaged in projects within the city limits. It is the responsibility of contractors to ensure their subcontractors obtain business licenses.

The City's business license is a tax certificate and license as defined by the City's Municipal Code Chapter 10B. The business license is non-regulatory and it does not exempt businesses from obtaining further licensure and permits as required by local, county, state, and/or federal law.

Businesses, including home-based and online businesses, risk citations and fines from the Police Department for operating without a business license and a home occupation permit.

Click on the "Business License Portal" icon above to begin the online application. As an alternative, if you are experiencing any issues with the online application, you may download the application and submit by email to: bl@fairfield.ca.gov -- please note that you are not required to pay until approval. You are also welcome to apply in-person by utilizing the public access computers in the Community Development lobby of the 2nd floor of City Hall. You may also drop off applications for processing as well.

The Business License Portal is where you can: apply for a new business license, renew your business license, report business closure, update business information, as well as search business licenses.

For new business licenses, please expect up to 10 business days for processing--depending on the volume of applications received. Please note the business license tax certificate will be sent via email as a PDF attachment. Also, please notify us of any corrections needed as soon as possible, or if you have not received your business license within 10 business days.

If there is a change in ownership, the existing business license must be closed and then the new owner must submit a new application.

Businesses involving any type of massage must contact the Police Department for a massage license in addition to the business license. Please note that the business license will not be issued until the massage license application has been approved.

Businesses that are mobile/itinerant, including food trucks, door-to-door sales, pop-up sales throughout the City not associated with a special event application, etc., are subject to an additional process for business licensing and a Solicitor/Peddler/Itinerant Merchant permit issued by the Police Department. For these forms and more information, please contact the Police Department or Community Development Department.

Thank you for doing business within the City of Fairfield!
