Project Overview

West Texas Street is an important roadway connecting I-80 to downtown Fairfield and its community destinations including shopping centers, schools, regional parks, city and county government headquarters, a performing arts center, and an aquatics complex. This commercial corridor also links residents to key transportation hubs such as the intermodal Fairfield Transportation Center and Suisun-Fairfield train station.

The existing street is a former state highway which formed a highway-commercial district designed to move cars.  With the growth of the city and the re-routing of the highway, it now serves as a local road, however it needs to serve both commercial needs and the needs of residents who do not own cars, or rely on bicycles, walking, and mass transit.

The proposed complete-street improvements will make the roadway safer, which will encourage more people to bicycle and walk. Newer, better-designed mixed-use corridors will attract new residents, jobs, and commercial development.

In preparation for the complete street improvements, the City started construction on the West Texas Street Gateway Improvements in Spring of 2021. The City is also planning two major utility projects on West Texas Street which are needed to support the complete streets project.  The first project will replace/relocate the water main between Curtis Drive and Pennsylvania Avenue, and the second project will install a sewer reliever trunk main between 5th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. Together these planned improvements will have a positive impact on residents and community members who travel on the West Texas Street corridor.

January 17 Community Workshop

We will be providing a project update on the status of the West Texas Street Improvements between Beck and Pennsylvania on Wednesday, January 17, 2024 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Downtown Theatre at 1035 Texas Street.

West Texas Street is an important corridor that connects I-80 to downtown Fairfield and various community destinations. Proposed complete-street improvements will make the road safer and encourage more people to walk and cycle. The well-designed mixed-use thoroughfare will attract new residents, jobs, and commercial development, making it a more desirable location for everyone.
